Join us for a walk into Palatine’s past. A few years ago we portrayed Mary Staples who was born in Vermont in 1820. After she married Lyman Staples in 1837, the couple decided to come West. They traveled to Chicago on the lakes, then walked out to Deer Grove via Milwaukee Avenue, an Indian trail through prairie and sloughs. They settled in a log cabin in a wooded area where wolves and Indians still roamed. In fact, Mary was known among the Indians as the “she devil.” Eventually the couple owned a 600 acre dairy farm at Staples Corners (Rand and Dundee Roads area). Mary died in 1905.
