Cemetery Walk
Sunday, May 17, 1:00-4:00 pm
Hillside Cemetery (Smith Street south of Northwest Highway)
Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for members, and $2 for children under age 16. You will hear costumed actors tell you stories of the people who lived here long ago.
Last year, our guests heard from John Law, one of our earliest policemen. Did you know that he also had to put stray dogs in the pound and shoot them if he didn’t find the owner? He also was a night watchman. Clarinda Cady Pinney, believed to be the first born white child in the township, was here to tell us about her early life in Deer Grove and her marriage to one of the railroad workers who built the first tracks out from Chicago.
This year will be just as entertaining. You will hear from Wesley Comfort, one of Palatine’s volunteer fire chiefs.
Nancy Sutherland was the township’s first teacher. She first taught in a log cabin on the Cady farm in Deer Grove. There will also be a mechanic from the service station on Chicago Avenue (now Palatine Road). Come
and listen to these and other early citizens of Palatine on May 17.
